Everything you need to know about the 2G and 3G switch off

3G shut down in Feb 2026, but 2G, 4G, and 5G are still live. However, 2G will be switching off in Summer 2029.

Back in February 2026, we (along with other UK networks) switched off 3G so we could focus on making our 4G and 5G connections faster and more reliable.

Most of our members are already on a 4G or 5G device, so if that’s you, you don't need to lift a finger. Nice and easy.

If your phone doesn't support 4G or 5G, you'll still be able to make calls and send texts, but you won't be able to use mobile data. To get back online on the move, you'll just need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G model.

Deactivating the 2G network

In Summer 2029, we’ll be saying goodbye to 2G. By switching it off, we can focus all our energy on making our 4G and 5G networks even better for you - bringing faster speeds, more reliable connections, and a greener, more energy-efficient network overall.

Just like with the 3G switch-off, if you’re already using a 4G or 5G device, you don't need to anything.

If you do happen to use an older phone that relies on 2G, don't worry. We’ve got your back. As we get closer to 2029, we’ll reach out via email and SMS with all the guidance and support you need to help you pick out a simple upgrade.

Will I lose my photos or apps when I change phones?
