We, and other UK networks, are switching off 3G so we can focus on faster, more reliable 4G and 5G.
The 3G network is in the process of being switched off with the aim of it being fully switched off by the end of 2025, although some areas may still see a 3G signal for a short period in early 2026.
We know that many of our members already have a 4G or 5G device and don’t have to take any action as a result of 3G being withdrawn. However, if your phone isn’t 4G capable, you’ll need to upgrade your phone to one that is 4G capable.
We've been contacting all members who’re using 3G devices to let them know, and will continue to do so right up until the final 3G mast is turned off.
Anyone who doesn’t upgrade before 3G is switched off in their area will still be able to make calls and send text messages as they do today, but they won’t be able to use mobile data.
How do I check if I'm ready for the 3G switch off?
There's a few steps you'll need to take to make sure you're ready:
Make sure your address is updated
We’ve been contacting all members who’re using 3G devices and will continue to do so right up until the final 3G mast is turned off. Make sure the address information on your account is correct so we can keep you up to date. To do this:
Log into your giffgaff account
Go to 'Account', then 'Profile & Settings'
Scroll to ‘My Address’, then 'Open', 'Edit' and 'Save'
Check your device's compatibility
We’ve put together a handy list of devices that work with VoLTE and WiFi Calling. If you already have a compatible device, make sure you enable WiFi and VoLTE so you have the best experience when we switch off 3G.If your device isn't compatible, you may want to upgrade if your phone doesn’t support VoLTE or WiFi Calling. We’ve got a fab range of refurbished and new devices to suit different budgets.
Enable WiFi Calling and VoLTE on your device
This helps keep you connected on 4G for calls and texts.
FAQs
What about 2G?
What about 2G?
We’re not switching off 2G, so that’s staying put. But we're retiring our older 3G network so we can give you a smoother, faster mobile experience. At the same time, we’re boosting 4G and 5G coverage across the UK.
Going forward, you’ll need a device that supports WiFi Calling and VoLTE to keep making calls, sending texts and using mobile data without any hiccups.
Do I need to change my SIM card?
