From June 2025, European energy label regulations mean all phones and tablets must declare energy efficiency info, helping you shop smarter. Here’s what you need to know.

Energy labels explained

These labels are designed to give shoppers a quick snapshot of a device’s energy efficiency, durability and repairability. Key information you’ll find on each one includes:

  • Energy efficiency class: Rated from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient).

  • Battery endurance per cycle: The expected battery life from a single full charge, shown in hours and minutes.

  • Repeated free-fall reliability class: Rated from A (most robust) to E (least robust), showing the device’s ability to handle accidental drops.

  • Repairability class: Rated from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable).

  • Battery endurance in cycles: The number of charge/discharge cycles a battery can undergo before its capacity drops below 80% of its original rating (e.g. “800x”).

  • Ingress protection (IP) rating: Showing the device’s level of protection against dust and water (e.g. “IP68”).

  • QR code: Linking to more details in a product information sheet.

Product information sheet

As well as an energy label, each device also has an electronic product information sheet. Just scan the QR code on any energy label to link straight to the sheet for that device, which contains the following extra info.

  • The device’s operating system

  • Whether the battery is user-replaceable

  • The detailed Repairability Index and its sub-scores (e.g. disassembly depth, tools needed)

  • Minimum guaranteed availability of operating system updates

  • Links to information on spare parts availability and repair instructions

Find your phone’s energy label

Here’s how to check the EU’s official labels database. You’ll need your phone’s serial number before you start. Find it below:

  1. Enter your serial number in the search bar at the top of the page, making sure to search by ’Model identifier’

  2. This will bring up the energy rating for your phone, along with all the info listed previously
