How to use your phone whilst on holiday

When you go abroad, your device will be able to connect to local network providers, so you can carry on using your giffgaff SIM for calls, texts and data. This is called roaming.

If you're visiting the EU or selected destinations and you've got a plan, here's what it'll cover:

  • You'll still get unlimited calls and texts to standard rate numbers in the country you are in, as well as back to the UK

  • Our plans have a roaming cap of 5 GB. If you have a plan with less than 5 GB you can use your whole allowance

  • If you use up your data or hit the roaming cap, you'll pay 10p per MB

  • You can start a new plan early to renew your data cap, if you have less than 500 MB of your plan’s total, or, EU data allowance remaining

  • There are also limits on eligibility and duration as described in Everything you need to know about roaming in the EU

In the rest of the world

  • Charges can vary depending on your location. For detailed charges, be sure to check the roaming pricing page

  • When you arrive in a new country, you'll receive a text about the roaming charges there

  • As a giffgaff member, you can still roam like at home when holidaying in the EU. Some countries require you to have credit in your account to use roaming services

  • There is a default position of a £45 monthly cap (on data spend only) renewed on the first day of each month. You can turn off the roaming data spend cap from your profile settings https://www.giffgaff.com/call-services

  • Check your balance online, on the giffgaff app or by dialling 43430, option 2

  • The usage statement will show your mobile charges from roaming

  • To call a UK number while abroad, you'll need to add the international dialling code: strip off the 0 at the beginning of the number and add +44 instead (or 00 44)

  • Roaming Like At Home is for members who spend most of their time in the UK. So if your travels are over an extended period, or you’ve had several trips lately, you’ll no longer be eligible. Find out more here
