The giffgaff mobile contract

How our flexible, no-commitment mobile plans work and why they’re different from traditional contracts. Including; what to do when your contract has ended and how to cancel your contract.

Written by Mark

What is a giffgaff mobile contract? Glad you asked, as our mobile contracts work a little differently.

Our contracts last 18 months, and our pay monthly contract plans give you more data for your money compared with our other plans.

Plus, you can switch your monthly plan up or down whenever you need, without re-setting the term of your contract.

We also think you should be able to leave in a way that’s fair. So if it’s not right for you, we’ll meet you in the middle with an early termination charge.

Head over to our blog to learn more about our mobile contracts.

Can I end my mobile contract early?

Yes, you can.

We think you should be able to leave in a way that’s fair. So if it’s not right for you, we’ll meet you in the middle with an early termination charge. It’s set at 50% of the cost of your current or most recent plan, multiplied by the number of full months left in your contract.

For those who like a formula

Early termination charge = ([Cost of your current plan]/2) x [Number of months left in your contract]

How to end your contract early

  • Online - Log into your account, then go to 'Orders & payments' > 'Terminate your contract' > then 'End my contract'

  • Through the App - tap 'Account' > 'Payments' > 'Your contract' > 'Terminate your contract' > 'End my contract'

FAQs

How can I pay for my mobile contract?

There are a couple of ways to pay for your mobile contract. You’ll need to save a credit or debit card when signing up to a contract and can later switch your payment method to recur from credit, Paypal or a voucher.

Your plan will be set to auto-renew each month of your contract so you’ll need to have one of these two options saved in your account.

Can I change my contract payment date?

Your payment date will be the same each month. You can’t change it, but if you run out of data you can start your next plan early. In that case, your payment date will change accordingly.

How long do giffgaff contracts last?

Right now we’re offering members the opportunity to stick with us for 18 months. But we might shake things up in the future with different contract lengths for you to choose from.

Can I change my giffgaff plan during my contract?

Absolutely. You can switch your monthly plan up or down whenever you need, without re-setting the term of your contract.

  1. Head to your dashboard

  2. Under your next plan, use the 'change next plan' option

  3. Pick the plan you want and save the changes

  4. Your new plan will start when your current plan expires

You can also change your plan on the giffgaff App. Just select 'Change next plan' on the home screen and follow the instructions - easy peasy.

Note: You can switch between different contracts at any point (£8-£25) but it is not possible to switch to a different product type e.g. golden plan or standard plan.

How do I sign up for a new contract once my current one has ended?

If you’re happy with your rolling contract plan, you can continue enjoying all the benefits you get from it. There’s no need to sign up for a new 18 month contract.

If you’d like to change to a different contract plan with more or less data, then that would sign you up to a new contract.

To do this, simply update the contract plan you have set to auto-renew, once that new plan kicks in, you’ll be on a new 18 month contract.

How do I cancel my 18 month contract within the first 14 days?

If things aren’t working out, or you've just changed your mind, you can cancel your contract for free within the first 14 days. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Scroll down to find the ‘Terminate your contract’ link

  2. There, you have the option ‘End my contract

If your contract isn’t working for you, you can switch to a different plan from the same spot on your dashboard.

Can I request a refund for any unused credit or plans?

To request a refund for any unused credit or plans, you must contact one of our agents.

Provided your cancellation request is sent during the cancellation period, we'll refund you as follows:

  • If you purchased credit, we'll reimburse the remainder (i.e. your current balance).

  • If you purchased a plan, you'll be refunded in proportion to the amount of the plan you have not used. A completely unused plan will be refunded in full.

Any refund will be made to the same means of payment you used during the activation of your SIM card. If you used a voucher during this operation, we'll send you separate instructions for the refund. We'll initiate the refund within 14 days of receiving your request for cancelling your order. Please allow for 3 to 5 business days for the funds to reach your bank account.

Is there a cooling off period if I change my mind about my contract?

Yes, there is. All new members have 14 days from the date of activation to cancel their contract for free.

Members can do this by logging in and heading to the 'Profile and settings' tab in their dashboard.
