Good news. You might be able to make a bit of cash from your old phone. Pop over to giffgaffrecycle.com to check.

Phones that are a bit long in the tooth without a trade-in value, or any of the other products we sell, can be posted to us for recycling at:

Freepost RUGJ-LUKK-XZBZ

Unit 10 Silverglade Business Park

Chessington

Make sure you factory reset your old phone before you send it for maximum security. Pop it in a comfy package so it’s safe and secure on its journey. You don’t need to enclose anything apart from what you’d like to recycle, and you don’t need to provide any sender details.

Why are we doing this?

Because it’s the right thing to do. And we’d get in all kinds of trouble if we didn’t. The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations mean we have to, and so do loads of other companies. The Regulations require distributors of all sorts of household and business appliances to make sure there is a scheme in place to take back the equipment at the end of its life. For giffgaff, that means any of the products we sell to you, such as mobile phones, chargers, SIM cards, and other electronic accessories as well.

But most importantly, recycling old phones is part of our commitment to reducing waste and making a positive impact on the planet. We’re proud as punch to make more sustainable choices and improve our environmental performance wherever we can.

How does the scheme work?

When you buy something new from giffgaff, we can take back the old equipment that you are replacing on a one-for-one basis.* Our main aim is that all returned equipment will be refurbished and reused where possible. Things like phones contain materials that, while harmless to start with, begin to degrade and pollute the environment if they end up in landfills. So we want to give equipment another useful lease of life, or where that’s not possible, to responsibly dispose of it.

For data protection purposes, we forensically wipe all devices returned to us. Our specialist partners then assess the equipment to see if it can be refurbished and reused. If the equipment is not suitable for reuse, the small amounts of precious metals, gold and silver, and base metals such as copper and iron are removed and go back into productive use.

Does giffgaff make any money from recycling?

No, we don’t. Any money we’re entitled to from recycling will be donated straight to Good Things Foundation. They’re partnered with our recycling buddies over at Genuine Solutions, and are working to make digital resources accessible for everyone.

The wheelie bin symbol.

Look out for the crossed through wheelie bin symbol. You’ll find this on all new communications equipment and on a range of other household and business appliances.

It’s there to remind us not to throw the product in the bin where it will end up in landfill and cause damage to the environment. If it can’t be reused, please recycle it safely.

*Please note that some companies may demand equipment back (like routers). Failure to return it to them may result in a charge. Always check before disposing of equipment.
